12: Ted Frank, Story Strategist - Backstories Studio

Ted Frank, Story Strategist at Backstories Studio, joins Andy to talk about how movie storytelling can dramatically improve corporate presentations.

"There are three parts to it: They make it simple. They make it real. And they make it powerful."

"Screenwriters start with three key scenes...and they develop those first. And then they have a map of where the story is going."

"We are all emotional people, even though we forget when we present."

"Sound can create an emotional bond."

"The secret ingredient... that will absolutely make people engaged with it and captivated with it is... tension."

Ted's Drink

Bourbon Basil Smash (adapted from Rachael Ray Every Day)

10 Thai or regular basil leaves
1 1/2 ounces bourbon
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
1/2 ounce ginger-infused simple syrup
1/4 ounce lemon-lime simple syrup
Basil leaf

Creating Ginger-infused Simple Syrup: Put equal parts water and sugar into a saucepan. Cook over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Turn off heat. Add ginger to taste. Once syrup is dissolved, remove ginger and store.

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake the first 5 ingredients until cold; strain into a rocks glass half-filled with lightly crushed ice. Stir; top with more lightly crushed ice. Garnish with basil leaf.

10: Menaka Shroff, Head of Marketing - Betterworks

Menaka Shroff, Head of Marketing at Betterworks, joins Andy over a margarita to talk about marketing technology, staying on message, her time at Box, and the importance of mentoring.

"Account-based marketing might be the next big thing that may not be the next big thing"

"If your database is over 100,000, I would do Marketo audits every [six months to a year]"

"With messaging, sometimes it’s important to be patient with it…. companies and spokespeople get tired of the message long before the marketplace ever does."

"The next generation needs to focus on what I called the MAD acronym: focus on Messaging, Analytics and Design."

Menaka's Drink

Margarita (from Serious Eats)

Lime wedge, plus 2 lime wheels for garnish
1 tablespoon coarse salt, for glass rims
4 ounces high quality blanco tequila (see note above)
2 ounces Cointreau
1 1/2 ounces fresh juice from 2 limes

Run lime wedge around the outer rims of two rocks glasses and dip rims in salt. Set aside. In cocktail shaker, combine tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice. Fill with ice and shake until thoroughly chilled, about 15 seconds (the bottom of a metal shaker should frost over). Fill glasses with fresh ice and strain margarita into both glasses. Garnish with lime wheels and serve.
